The wildebeest of migration.

It is the migration for which Serengeti is perhaps most famous. Over a million wildebeest and about 200,000 zebras flow south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short rains every October and November, and then swirl west and north after the long rains in April, May and June. So strong is the ancient instinct to move that no drought, gorge or crocodile infested river can hold them back.

This impressive phenomenon is determined by the availability of grazing which in turn is dependent upon rainfall. Essentially the wildebeest are taking advantage of the strongly seasonal conditions, spending the wet season on the plains in the southeast, and the dry seasons in the woodlands of the northwest. However, the sheer volume of their numbers also plays an important role in shaping the environment to their needs.

Members of the vast wildebeest give birth more or less simultaneously, usually over a period of four weeks sometime between February and March, when the best grazing is available on the short grass plains. Its believed that 8000 calves are born every day.
